Panelling
Wall paneling is the fitting of wooden mouldings to create depth, shape, and character. It's a relatively simple addition, but the difference it makes to a room is significant — traditionally suited to period properties, but equally at home in a contemporary setting.
This project was a front room and staircase in a small period property with three-metre-high ceilings. The paneling was laid out in a full grid configuration — divided into thirds horizontally with top, divider, and bottom rails, and split into thirds vertically to create a series of equal panels across the wall. The proportions suited the ceiling height well and gave the room a strong, balanced feel.
Once the paneling was in place, the room was finished with a through paint job. The floorboards were sanded back and finished in a dark satin stain. All fixtures and fittings were updated throughout. Taken together, it gave the room a cohesive, considered finish — modern in feel, but firmly rooted in tradition.
